Odoo: the 5 most frequently asked questions

Wondering how to run Odoo without a permanent internet connection, or what the system will actually cost you? We have selected and answered the five questions our customers ask most often.

1. Do I need an internet connection to use Odoo?

The answer depends on the needs of each customer and on the scope of business processes the company wants to run in Odoo. We discuss the hosting options with every customer individually.

The simplest option is hosting Odoo in the cloud. This variant requires an internet connection, otherwise the system cannot be used. On the other hand, it brings a whole range of advantages and functions, such as sending e-mails directly from Odoo or using Odoo for digital marketing.

Odoo can also be installed on your own premises. That means your data is stored on a server inside your company. This option is mostly chosen by companies that have no internet access at their sites (typically warehouses and factories), or by companies that want to secure their data as tightly as possible.

If you want to use Odoo in your shop as a point of sale (PoS), we recommend cloud hosting. The shop is usually located elsewhere and on a different network. Even if the internet connection drops, your PoS keeps working in offline mode and synchronises with the rest of the system as soon as the connection is restored.

2. Where is Odoo stored? Is my data safe with Odoo?

Depending on each client's needs, Odoo can run in the cloud, on the company's own servers or on our servers.

3. How much will Odoo cost me?

There are two editions of Odoo: Community and Enterprise.

Odoo Community is free of charge, with a limited set of functions. All the modules are available, however, and for an unlimited number of users.

Many smaller companies start with exactly this edition. Customising the system precisely to the client's needs and adding the missing functions is often the more economical route compared with the licence price of the Enterprise edition.

Odoo Enterprise is the professional edition that can handle even the most complex business processes. The final price is calculated from the number of users, the number of apps and the hosting (server fee).

4. We already use a specialised system, but we want to start using Odoo as our ERP. Is integration possible?

The greatest advantage of an ERP system is having all business processes covered in one place, in a single system. That is also one of the reasons why we usually recommend that our clients migrate to Odoo from their current systems.

On the other hand, if you have highly specialised, unique software, we can integrate it with Odoo provided we get access to your system's API.

5. I use an older version of Odoo. Why should I upgrade to the latest one?

Every new Odoo version brings several benefits: better performance, higher stability and new functions. Odoo Enterprise users can upgrade their system free of charge to a newer version.

We recommend using the latest version of Odoo for the Community edition too. New functions are added to it every year, free of charge. We are happy to help you upgrade an old version of Odoo as well.
